Shame
Shame is an emotionally painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the awareness of wrong or foolish behavior; it may be internally or externally applied to a given condition or circumstance. When healthy, shame is a positive guiding force of right and wrong; when used as a teaching mechanism from an authority figure, it may offer guidance; when applied as a punishment, shame is powerful source of lifelong pain. Shame is said to afflict 98% of the Western population in some form.
