ABOUT BARNSTORMERS
The Iowa Barnstormers is the #1 boys AAU organization in the State of Iowa. The girls program has several great teams including one in which all players have college offers. A group of parents is interested in building highly competitive lower grade teams based out of the Iowa City area.

Team activities, policies, tournaments and fees are determined largely by coaches with consideration for the needs of the families/players selected.

For example, an older team may structure itself as a HS Varsity & College Prep program that runs from September through July and attends out of state showcases and NCAA viewing tournaments with fees approaching $1,400 spread out over the season. However, a lower grade team may choose to hold their season for 3 months during the winter, attend only small local tournaments, and charge $300.

Teams are built by coaches based on what they need to build the kind of team/program they want to run. This may include player/family commitment to basketball, coachability, height, speed, skill, etc… Players that are highly skilled, athletic and/or motivated/coachable may have the opportunity to “play up” a grade level.

ABOUT TRYOUTS
We want your child to do their best. We know kids are nervous at tryouts. Some hold back on defense, steals, attacking the lane, etc…because they don’t want to look like a ball hog or make other kids mad at them. So,

1. Please consider arriving early and warming up on the sidelines and hallways.

2. Do what the coach tells you to do. If they tell you to jump stop when you get to the baseline at the end of a dribbling drill – jump stop. A coach may see quickly that you love to shoot and attack the lane, and so, ask you to focus on passing the ball because that’s what we want to see. Do it.

3. Try to stand out by being confident, aggressive, and competitive. Don’t worry about hurting other kids feelings by playing great defense and stealing the ball. Take the shot that is open.

4. Don’t forget to be a “great teammate.” We look for kids who are positive, uplifting other kids and the group while still playing as aggressive and competitive against them as possible.

Finally, if players feel like they really didn’t do their best for whatever reason, the player should send us an email (sam@samingersoll.com) and ask for another individual evaluation.

Coaches have a lot of respect for kids who really love basketball enough to request a second opportunity.

See you at tryouts or contact us if you have questions/concerns.
